Abstract
Iodine is an essential dietary nutrient that helps the body to produce thyroxine, the hormone that regulates normal growth and development. The quantity of iodine requirement is minute i.e. 150-200 micrograms per day which amounts to a pinhead a month. An average lifetime requirement of an individual would be less than a teaspoonful of iodine. Still iodine deficiency is one of the major public health problems faced by the developing world with more than one billion people at risk.
